From the recording God Rules
Guys let me tell you about my 5th great grandma Lydia Knight! She went through so much in her life including an abusive first husband who abandoned her only a few months before losing both her children to illness. She found solace in a new faith and a new awesome husband. They built a life and family together only to be driven multiple times from their home because of how they chose to worship God. Eventually she even lost her husband Newel to illness caused by exposure to the cold after they were again driven from their home in Illinois. She was left to get her and her 7 children (the 7th born in a cave in Iowa shortly after her husbands death) the 1200 miles on foot to Salt Lake City by herself, where others of her faith had travelled to live their religion in peace. Rather than turn bitter or deny what she believed, she lived by the phrase “God Rules”. My life is very different from hers but the phrase “God Rules” still rings so true to me today. It reminds me that God is “in the details of our lives”. While I don’t believe He causes bad things to happen in most cases, He does sit with us in our sorrows and ultimately He can turn our griefs into wisdom and even joy.
Lyrics
A young girl all alone abandoned in grief
Wonders if there is joy to be had
As she searches for answers a flame of faith
Starts to melt away all of her sad
Then she looks to the Lord and He leads her to truth
And she learns how to trust Him to carry her through
God rules, in the details of our lives
God rules through the joy and the strife
God rules in the dark and the light
He’s there by our side God rules
A young mother alone stands before a mob
On a cold October night
She knows why they’re here so she swallows her fear
Her courage could save many lives
She speaks boldly to them as she silently prays
Filled with strength not her own as the men walk away
God rules in the details of our lives
God rules in the joy and the strife
God rules in the dark and the light
He’s there by our side God rules
While our lives are not easy
And pathways not straight
If we trust in His plan
He will show us His way
A young widow looks on as they carry her love
In a box to a shallow grave
With her young ones in tow she just doesn’t know
How she ll conquer the miles in her way
Then she looks at her children with time as her proof
And leans on the words that are now her truth
God rules in the details of our lives
God rules in the joy and the strife
God rules in the dark and the light
He’s there by our side God rules
Through the joy and the strife
God rules in the dark and the light
He’s there by our side
God rules
